Why You Should Own Gold and Silver by Thomas Bottaro ChFC

In February 2007, a troy ounce of paper gold was priced at $670
on the Comex. In January of this year, the same troy ounce
reached $1,200, before settling back his past week to $1,145.
I use the term “paper gold” advisedly because it exists only on
paper. Physical gold–which you can hold in your hand or pocket
as your very own–carries a more realistic price, now about $1,230–
still a real bargain in comparison to the Federal Reserve fiat dollar.

It has been noted that the volume of gold sold on the Comex every
day far exceeds he actual amount of the yellow metal that is actually
delivered to a buyer’s door step. In other words, Comex contracts
for the stuff are bought and sold with no intent of actual ownership.
That sort of marketplace lends itself to manipulation by denizens like
Goldman Sachs, the bullion dealer indicted last week (finally!) by the
Securities Exchange Commission for double dealing–playing both
ends against the middle–in worthless mortgage-based derivatives.

Physical gold and silver are real money. They will always have value
in terms of whatever paper currency is floating around at any given
moment. Gold guru Jim Sinclair has estimated that were it not for
the market manipulations by the likes of Goldman Sachs, the sad
state of the dollar today would be accurately reflected by a gold
price of about $5,500. Sinclair has predicted that physical gold
will reach $1,650 by the end of 2010 or early 2011. Silver will
keep pace: $25 per troy ounce is not far-fetched.

I am often asked for my thoughts about owning gold and silver.
My consistent answer is “yes, buy them!” Both are easy to buy,
easy to sell, but they do have the problem of how and where to
store it. I advise that the dire problems with the dollar make it
mandatory to place 25-35 per cent of one’s monetary assets
into gold and silver. That is insurance against the ongoing decline
of the dollar’s purchasing power. For that reason, as a long-term investment, it’s difficult to find one with as much staying power under all of the dire economic circumstances facing the U.S. today in the next 2-5 years.

An ounce of gold uses the same amount of storage space as an
ounce of silver, so–when storage space is limited–it makes sense
to buy gold. The best place to store your gold and silver is in a
fire-proof safe cemented or bolted into place within your own home.

The best form of either gold or silver to purchase is coins produced
and warranted by government mints. The most popular gold coins
are the U.S.Eagle, the Canadian Maple Leaf, the South African
Kruggerand, and the Austrian Philharmonic, in that order. I strongly
suggest that you avoid those gold dealers you see heavily advertised
on television commercials. They have heavy overhead costs, and
high mark-ups to cover them. They also will likely try to sell you
numismatic coins that are–they argue–not subject to government
confiscation. That’s scenario is highly unlikely. Instead, look for independent jobbers who carry no inventory themselves, and who charge a small commission for handling your purchases and also pay freight and insurance charges.
